The issue with this question is that there were two television crime series named after David Bowie songs. Ashes to Ashes was a sequel to Life on Mars, which was first broadcast in 2006–7.
Anyone who was born before about 1965 (dare I say that would probably include the majority of Quiz League contestants?) would probably be aware that the Bowie song Life on Mars? was released some time before 1980 (it was 1971). If you were aware of the Pinter play, so much the better; but it's not one of his best–known works.
